How to Sew A Pin Hem A.K.A Baby Hem

A pin hem or baby hem is one of my favourite ways of hemming and is suitable for so many different sewing projects. Definitely an important sewing technique to have in your techniques toolbox.

I find it is especially good for curved hems as it won't ripple the way other hems do.

Step one:
You can do this using a standard machine foot but I love using an edge stitch foot as it ensures the stitch is a uniform distance from the edge.

Regardless of which sewing machine foot you use, fold the hem over about 6mm and stitch close to the edge.

Step two:

Carefully cut off the excess as close to the stitch line as you can without cutting through the stitching.

Step three:
Fold the hem over again and stitch down. Once again you can do this with a standard foot or using an edge stitch foot or magnetic guides to help ensure a beautifully uniform hem width.
